(8 may): managed to watch the long awaited ip man 2 (葉問2) .... like finally!
ip man 2 is the continued story of the first movie at the point where ip man, played by donnie yen (甄子丹), left foshan and fled to hk wif his family. depicting his effort in starting a new life in hk, the movie starts of wif ip man trying to open a school to teach wing chun, facing many hardships, financially in particular. the plot continues to revolve ard ip man striving for the approval of other martial arts sifus in hk, as well as to protect the locals by fending off western disdain for chinese culture.
there were more intense fighting scenes as compared to the first movie, which focuses more on the emotional side of the storyline. u can also view my review of the first movie here. the sequel is more fast-paced, it's like... wat!? it has ended already??? we want more....! 1 hr 48 mins is juz not enough! the fighting scenes (esp the ones on the table) reminded me of some martial arts events or sports competition (but waaaaaaaay cooler of coz)... but no, this is not the olympics or world cup, there is no replay!! grrrr... i think i'll buy the dvd so i can view every move clearly, bit by bit! watch out for the breathtaking topnotch fighting scene between donnie and sammo on the table... coolness!! and i lov the part wherein the sifus were trying to give way to each other to test ip man's skills :)

“为了生活我可以忍，侮辱中国武术我绝不能忍”- as quoted by hung sifu, played by sammo hung (洪金寶). loved him so much since US tv series martial law.. vigorous, wif personal magnetism, sammo hung is exceptionally agile for his size, exhibiting an imposing manner of the much respected hung sifu in the film... viewers may think that hung sifu is kinda money-minded, but as the story progresses, it is revealed that hung sifu is very much patriotic and protective of his people and culture, as seen when he's trying to protect the other hong kong sifus upon the arrival of ip man, and as he stood up against twister the western boxer as he taunts and insults the chinese martial arts performance. 他真的很有大哥大的气派，一个字，"型"。
donnie yen
like it or not, in point of fact, donnie yen has made ip man & wing chun popular... i think the concept is kinda like how bruce lee's movies got so famous when hk & usa needed an underdog hero. the blacks and the chinese wanted a non-white to whom they could relate, as most of the protagonists in movies at that time were whites. everyone needs a hero.. and i dont think non-whites could relate themselves to iron man, x-men, watever-men etc, while ip man carries a strong pan-chinese cultural identity in both movies, protecting the chinese people and its culture against the japanese & the westerners. "我認為人的地位有高低之分，但人格不應該有貧賤之別。我今天來，不是為了證明中國武術或西方拳擊誰比較強。我很希望，從這一刻起，大家可以開始互相尊重。" - as quoted by ip man in the movie during his speech after defeating twister the western boxer, stating that both races should come to understand and respect each other.
huang xiaoming
without any martial art background like the other actors, huang xiaoming (黃曉明) did a relatively good job for his first kungfu film. according to wiki, he plays wong leung, a character based on yip man's real life disciple wong shun leung, who is later credited wif training bruce lee. altho his arrogance and hotheadedness has gotten him & ip man in trouble, his loyalty to ip man has in a way supported ip man to carry on wif his wing chun lessons after being asked to leave the rooftop. being young and impetuous, wong leung seems to have liven up the film, juz like jin shanzhao 金山找 in the first film, played by fan siu-wong (樊少皇).
lynn hung
as per my previous blog entrée on 第28届香港电影金像奖 (hk golden film award), chi ling's (林志琳) character in has has no apparent function besides its visual prominence in red cliff 2 (赤壁2: 决战天下)... and after watching ip man 2, i stil think that lynn hung (熊戴琳) did a muuuuuch better job as ip man's wife even wif minimal dialogue.. it's juz touching when she didnt wanna disturb ip man's preperation for the final match wif the news that she was gonna give birth to his 2nd child, very understanding and thoughtful. sry that i hv to complain abt chi-ling again but i juz detest her cartoonish "cute" voice and i felt that she should not be nominated along wif lynn during the 28th hk golden film award. they are of different classes.

not that i believed every single chunk of the movie, but i thought that the plot was at least loosely based on some actual events... kinda disappointed that there was no fights at the fish market, no duels against local hk masters, no boxing match against the western boxer... zzz.... so wat's real abt the movie!? hmmm.... nvm, it's stil a good movie :)

echoes of conscience
(24 apr) watched cop flick fire of conscience (火龍), starring leon lai 黎明 & richie ren 任賢齊.. liked the way the camera moved thru frozen frames and the series of time lapse shots at the beginning.. according to wiki, the chinese name of the film is derived from the scene where leon chased richie thru a street of dragon dance, and that both leon and richie's characters were born in the year of the dragon. [spoiler]: in terms of conscience, richie told leon that sooner or later leon will become just like him, overly-ambitious and deceitful.. altho leon's character is aggressive and vengeful, he conformed to his own sense of right conduct. he tried to save his sidekick and even the chinese suspect named huang whose pregnant wife is being held hostage, drawing from his own judgement and adherence. the whole concept of the film wasnt bad at all, but i just thot that the ending was kinda predictable and boring..
(25 apr) watched echoes of the rainbow (歲月神偷) @ tropicana city mall, wif simon yam 任達華 & sandra ng 吳君如 teaming up as a couple wif 2 sons, played by newcomers aarif lee 李治廷 & chung shiu to 鍾紹圖. it's a semi-autobiographical film directed by alex law. i would say that this is one of the best nostalgic hk film that i've ever watched. seen thru the eyes of a child (based on alex law himself), the story revolves ard a poor cobbler who lives in the suburban areas of hk in the 60's. lov its simple, non-exaggerated way of storytelling. [spoiler]: The film dealt wif some of the adversities faced by postwar hk, for example, bribery demanded by the british policeman, being looked down upon for not speaking english, as well as poverty, as faced by the cobbler's family when they had to pay for their elder son's medical fees etc. if u feel like watching something emotional for a change (as much anticipated action films such as iron man 2 & ip man 2 wil b in the cinemas soon), watch this!
